File Compression and Archiving in CentOS Linux |

In this module, we will discuss on various file compression and archiving techniques and tools. We will also discuss in details some backup and restore method in command line interface.
Like most of the Operating System, file compression means reduce the original file size. The major objective of file compression is reduce the size original document/file. This is particularly useful for internet download and backup to external medium (such as tape). Today, there are plenty of tools both GUI and CLI that ease the Linux Administrator for this routine operation. Depends on the nature of the file, an effective file compression can up to reduce 50% or more than its original file.
File archiving on the other hand referring to archive multiple files into one single archive file. This is also a the command to backup files and folder into tape.
