Step to login to CentOS GUI Desktop
Step 1: Type your username in textbox
Remember we created user account at last module? We are login to CentOS using Jane (normal user account). Also, you can login as "root", however, this is not recommended. Linux gurus always advise us to work as normal user account and change to root privilege when necessary only.
Step 2: Type in your password
Type is Jane's password. Note: CentOS warns me that my Cap Lock is on. Now Press ENTER key to login to Jane's account.
Step 3: User Login Check
How you know if you have login using Jane account? There are few ways you can check 1) Navigate to System Tab, you will notice "Log Out jane..." as highlighted are screen capture.
2) Click on Applications > Accessories > Terminal. This will open the terminal windows (shell window)
You will notice jane@srv:~ appears at both title windows and command prompt.
3) From the terminal screen, issue the following command. whoami By issuing above command, the command will return output : jane. This will tell you that you are login as user account jane.
So, if I need to work under root privilege, should I logout user account jane and login as root? the answer is NO. you can issue the following command.
